Large Handbags

***Please Note - a sewing machine is required for this project***

The easy way to make a beautiful spacious handbag!  The front and back panels and the flap are created in the hoop for perfect stitching and alignment every time!  This process allows for bags that are larger than the hoop.

Detailed instructions for every step of the process are included. This is not an in the hoop (ITH) project - a sewing machine is required to complete the bags.

It takes 3 hoopings to make the handbag:  first stitch the flap (in the hoop); then the back piece is created in the hoop and the flap is attached during this process; and then the front piece is done in the 3rd (final) hooping.  When the front and back are finished, sew a seam around the sides and bottom and do the same for the lining.  Box the corners then choose your strap or handle style and sew them on (detailed instructions are included) or use webbing for a no-sew handle, and sew the bag exterior to the lining around the top.  Turn it right side out, topstitch around the top, and the handbag is complete!

The design features a bee motif on the front flap but this can easily be removed or replaced with a monogram or design from your stash.  There is also a smaller version of this bag for the 5x7 and 6x10 hoops, the Pretty Purse set.

Materials needed (see image for detailed list):

  • cotton fabric for center panels
  • cotton, linen, canvas, cork, or vinyl for the side panels and handles/strap
  • fusible fleece such as Pellon 987F
  • woven fusible interfacing such as Pellon Shapeflex (SF101)
  • 6" piece of ribbon and a snap set (kam, halo and pearl snaps work great)

  • purse hardware is optional, depending on which handle/strap style you choose

Each handbag features a roomy inside with a padded lining, a front zipper pocket under the flap and a back slip pocket that snaps closed.  The flap has a super-practical zipper pocket in it for easy access to your bus pass or change.

The 7x11 hoop creates a purse that is 9" tall by 12" wide by 3" deep;

The 8x14 hoop creates a purse that is 11" tall by 14'" wide by 4" deep.

Each hooping has between 2000 and 5500 stitches.

Please note that this is a machine embroidery project - both an embroidery machine and a sewing machine are required to complete this project.
